Sometimes it shows up subtly; other times, it&#8217;s loud and clear. A client might brush off an exercise, avoid certain questions, or suddenly start procrastinating. But what exactly <em>is<\/em> resistance \u2013 and how can you, as a coach, respond effectively?<\/p>\n<style>.vcex-heading.vcex_69f14c13480a4{color:#1d8084;font-size:25px;font-family:'Source Sans Pro';font-weight:600;}<\/style><h2 class=\"vcex-heading vcex-heading-plain vcex-module wpex-heading wpex-text-2xl wpex-h2 vc_custom_1652693440953 vcex_69f14c13480a4\"><span class=\"vcex-heading-inner wpex-inline-block\">Resistance is part of the journey<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Resistance isn&#8217;t a problem to be solved; it\u2019s a natural part of the coaching journey. After all, if change were easy, your client likely wouldn&#8217;t have needed your support. Resistance signals that you are touching something deeply significant.<\/p>\n<p>Yet &#8216;resistance&#8217; is a broad term. It can present as anger, avoidance, fatigue, or uncertainty. Sometimes it feels like the conversation has hit a wall \u2013 the flow stalls, and the connection shifts. At these moments, the key is not to retreat, but to stay curious.<\/p>\n<style>.vcex-heading.vcex_69f14c1348dec{color:#1d8084;font-size:25px;font-family:'Source Sans Pro';font-weight:600;}<\/style><h2 class=\"vcex-heading vcex-heading-plain vcex-module wpex-heading wpex-text-2xl wpex-h2 vc_custom_1652693440953 vcex_69f14c1348dec\"><span class=\"vcex-heading-inner wpex-inline-block\">Recognising resistance<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Resistance can take many forms:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The client <em>doesn\u2019t want<\/em> to do something<\/li>\n<li>The client <em>doesn\u2019t dare<\/em> to do something<\/li>\n<li>The client <em>cannot<\/em> (yet) do something<\/li>\n<li>The client <em>doesn\u2019t understand<\/em> something<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Responding with judgement (&#8220;This person simply does not want to engage&#8221;) closes off possibilities. Instead, asking questions like, &#8220;What\u2019s making this difficult for you?&#8221; or &#8220;What are you feeling right now?&#8221; invites the client to explore what\u2019s happening beneath the surface \u2013 without the need to &#8216;fix&#8217; anything.<\/p>\n<style>.vcex-heading.vcex_69f14c13493f1{color:#1d8084;font-size:25px;font-family:'Source Sans Pro';font-weight:600;}<\/style><h2 class=\"vcex-heading vcex-heading-plain vcex-module wpex-heading wpex-text-2xl wpex-h2 vc_custom_1652693440953 vcex_69f14c13493f1\"><span class=\"vcex-heading-inner wpex-inline-block\">Dilemmas behind resistance<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>Resistance often stems from internal dilemmas: the desire for change pulling against the fear of the unknown, or loyalty to old beliefs conflicting with the urge to carve out a new path. As a coach, you might feel it too \u2013 hesitating to ask a difficult question, or slipping into telling rather than listening. Self-reflection is crucial. But when you lean into it, real movement becomes possible. Resistance is rarely a &#8220;no&#8221; directed at you personally; more often, it\u2019s a quiet &#8220;help&#8221; from within the client. It\u2019s an invitation to explore the edges where growth is waiting.<\/p>\n<p>By welcoming resistance rather than avoiding it, you bring real depth and meaning to your coaching work. It takes courage, patience, and self-awareness \u2013 but that\u2019s where the real magic of coaching happens.
