But what happens when that clarity is disrupted? As a coach, you may sense the dialogue becoming strained, or notice that your client isn\u2019t truly connecting. One common cause? Disqualifications \u2013 subtle, often unconscious communicative blocks that can undermine the coaching process. <\/strong><\/p>\n<style>.vcex-heading.vcex_69e151c13d739{color:#1d8084;font-size:25px;font-family:'Source Sans Pro';font-weight:600;}<\/style><h2 class=\"vcex-heading vcex-heading-plain vcex-module wpex-heading wpex-text-2xl wpex-h2 vc_custom_1652693440953 vcex_69e151c13d739\"><span class=\"vcex-heading-inner wpex-inline-block\">What are disqualifications?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>The concept of <em>disqualification<\/em> was introduced by psychologist Paul Watzlawick. It refers to messages that are vague, contradictory or confusing. At times, this may be intentional \u2013 for instance, to avoid conflict \u2013 but more often it occurs unconsciously, driven by fear, shame, or insecurity. In all cases, the result is the same: the message loses its potency and impact.<\/p>\n<p>There are three primary forms of disqualification that you, as a coach, need to learn to recognise and gently explore.<\/p>\n<style>.vcex-heading.vcex_69e151c13e4cc{color:#1d8084;font-size:20px;font-family:'Source Sans Pro';font-weight:400;}<\/style><h3 class=\"vcex-heading vcex-heading-plain vcex-module wpex-heading wpex-text-2xl wpex-h3 vc_custom_1652693440953 vcex_69e151c13e4cc\"><span class=\"vcex-heading-inner wpex-inline-block\">1. Disqualification by the sender<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Here, the client distances themselves from their own message. For example:<br \/>\n\u201cSome people might get upset by this.\u201d<br \/>\nBut what about the client themselves? This may be a strategy to avoid emotional engagement or personal responsibility. A helpful coaching response might be:<br \/>\n\u201cAnd how does this affect you personally?\u201d or \u201cWhat happens for you when this occurs?\u201d<\/p>\n<style>.vcex-heading.vcex_69e151c13eaa9{color:#1d8084;font-size:20px;font-family:'Source Sans Pro';font-weight:400;}<\/style><h3 class=\"vcex-heading vcex-heading-plain vcex-module wpex-heading wpex-text-2xl wpex-h3 vc_custom_1652693440953 vcex_69e151c13eaa9\"><span class=\"vcex-heading-inner wpex-inline-block\">2. Disqualification of the message<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>In this form, the message itself becomes unclear or contradictory. The client may use vague language, irony, or sidestep the topic altogether. For instance:<br \/>\n\u201cThat might work \u2013 if everything goes perfectly.\u201d<br \/>\nWhat does that actually mean? As coach, you could ask:<br \/>\n\u201cWhat do you mean by \u2018if everything goes perfectly\u2019? Disqualification by the receiver<\/span><\/h3>\n<p>Here, the client (as recipient of a suggestion or observation) ignores, downplays, or distorts the message. For example:<br \/>\n\u201cThat sort of thing doesn\u2019t work for me.\u201d<br \/>\nThis blocks the conversation before it even starts. As a coach, your role is not to gloss over these moments, but to slow down and explore them with curiosity and care. Naming what you notice \u2013 without judgement \u2013 helps restore clarity and empowers the client to take ownership of their narrative.<\/p>\n<style>.vcex-heading.vcex_69e151c13fcc8{color:#1d8084;font-size:25px;font-family:'Source Sans Pro';font-weight:600;}<\/style><h2 class=\"vcex-heading vcex-heading-plain vcex-module wpex-heading wpex-text-2xl wpex-h2 vc_custom_1652693440953 vcex_69e151c13fcc8\"><span class=\"vcex-heading-inner wpex-inline-block\">Practical tips for coaches:<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Ask open, curious questions<\/li>\n<li>Reflect inconsistencies between words and body language<\/li>\n<li>Gently probe vague or ambiguous expressions<\/li>\n<li>Bring the conversation back to the client: \u201cAnd how is this for you?\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Be aware of your own disqualifications as a coach<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Coaches who learn to recognise and name disqualifications can bring the conversation back to its core: authentic contact and meaningful change. Behind every evasive sentence or ironic remark often lies a deeper need for attention, recognition or transformation.<\/p>\n<p>Do you recognise these patterns in your conversations?
